There is actually a legitimate reason. Gyarados was originally going to be Water/Dragon, but the only type that can super effectively hit a Water/Dragon Pokemon is the Dragon-type, and the only Dragon-type move at the time of Generation 1 was Dragon Rage, which does a fixed amount of damage. The coders decided that, with all that in mind, a Water/Dragon Pokemon would be overpowered (as all Pokemon were weak to at least one type, up until the introduction of the Dark/Ghost combo), but they still wanted to give Gyarados a second type. Thus, they chose Flying, deciding it would be the most fitting secondary type that didn't break the game.
Of course, Psychic-types are overpowered beyond BELIEF in Generation 1, but that for some reason went unchecked.
that water flying went down like a stone on water at a 4x damage vs electric n.nU, also psychic was annoying because all ghosts were poison also, that was a 2x damage vs psychic while the only one having advantage on them was bug, and bug moves sucked =3=
Fun fact is that Gyarados was supposed to be Water/Dragon, but since the only dragontype move was Dragonrage, Gyarados had no weakness, as dragonrage gives 40 damage no matter what, and water eliminated the ice type weakness of dragon, while dragon eliminated the grass and electric weakness of water... why they didn't change him to water/dragon in gen 2 is a mystery though
Reminds me of the Troll comic when the kid didn't know his materials during the final. 20 minutes later he flips his desk and says "F*ck this, I'm gonna be a pokemon trainer!" then storms out of the room. lol, good work
