When they first created the anime they had normal animals in it, in the first episode we see a school of real fish but they RetConned them (Basically that's them trying to pull a jedi mind trick on the viewers "You never saw any fish, there where no fish, no fish ever existed") Don't ask me why since it's more than a little horrifying if there eating pokemon and other shows/games like Monster Rancher have made real animals and fantasy animals living side by side work.
